The Heart and Art of Playback Theatre
Ben Rivers, a British-Australian writer, educator and drama therapist who has 14 years of experience working with those impacted by oppression, violence and trauma, will be conducting a 5-day intensive, interactive introduction to Playback Theatre in Mumbai.
Used in over 60 countries as a tool for community building, trauma response and cultural activism, Playback Theatre is a powerful response to the fundamental human need to share one's story.
In this workshop, participants will develop their ability to identify the central events, meanings and emotions that a 'teller' presents in their story; we will learn to identify the important historical, social and political forces that are mentioned or implied. We will also develop ways to translate these 'narrative cornerstones' into enactments that are rich in artistry and effective ensemble work. In addition, we will focus on voice development, movement practice and improvisational skills. The philosophy and application of Playback Theatre for community building, cultural activism and trauma response will also be explored.
This workshop is accredited through The Freedom Theatre's School of Playback Theatre - an affiliate school of the New York-based Centre for Playback Theatre. Workshop hours can be counted towards an internationally recognized Diploma in Playback Theatre.
Performing artists, educators, community workers and cultural activists are welcome to apply.

Dr Vijaya Mehta, the well-known and veteran theatre personality will be conducting an intensive study course for Actors, Directors and Observers. The workshop has been organised by Pancham Nishad.
It will be held from February 11 to 15 2014 between 10 am and 2 pm at the Ravindra Natya Mandir, Mini Auditorium, Prabhadevi.
Noted actors, who have been Vijaya Mehta's students in the past, will be participating in the programme and these include Vikram Gokhale, Neena Kulkarni, Vijay Kenkre, Meena Naik, Ajit Bhure and Ashwini Ekbote.
Vijaya Mehta will introduce and demonstrate her beliefs and methods of training for today's theatre's practitioners. In each session, twenty participants will work with her in the presence of observers comprising leading actors from theatre, television and cinema. Each session will end with a question and answer segment where observers can interact. The workshop will focus on actors but will also be of great value to directors as Vijaya Mehta will explore the critical area of 'handling the actors'.
Initially trained by Ebrahim Alkazi, Vijaya Mehta studied actor training methods in Europe and in the USA. She was among the first directors from India to work on international theatre projects. She has influenced the teaching methods at the National School of Drama, where she was Chairperson for four years. Certificate Course from the
Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute
METHOD
ACTING WORKSHOP
David
Lee Strasberg will work with students, giving them a focused and concentrated
taste of The Lee Strasberg Method ®. The Method trains actors to use
their physical, mental, and emotional experience to conceive and express the
life of the character. It provides them with a craft that helps them
create a reality and respond truthfully under imaginary circumstances in any
acting medium or style.
Films of
Lee Strasberg’s lectures will be used to enlighten and demonstrate his
Method. David will introduce concentration and sensory exercises
developed by his father, as well as scenes, monologues, and improvisation, to
help students integrate the exercises into the actor’s work.
FILM
& TELEVISION WORKSHOP
Using the
foundation of Lee Strasberg Method Acting®, Sasha Krane will focus on
developing camera awareness and how the actor creates interesting physical
behavior. The class will study classic film scenes and examine what the actors
are doing to create memorable moments and characters. The students will
prepare scenes, which will be reviewed, and notes and adjustments will be
given. The differences and common ground between the three primary acting
media of stage, film, and television will be explored. The scenes will be
recorded, so that students can analyze their work.
This
class is designed to be practical and relevant. Students will have the
opportunity to act in front of the camera. Interested students will also have
the opportunity to handle the camera and film scenes or even practice directing
in order to understand the dynamic between the actor and director.

NCPA Summer Fiesta 2012:
The NCPA Summer Fiesta returns in 2012 in a bigger, better avatar, with a wide range of workshops and plays for children.
In 2010, the NCPA decided to initiate ‘Summer Fiesta’ as a means to reach out to children and offer them an exciting way to spend their vacations.
In 2012 the NCPA Summer Fiesta will focus on diversity over and above quantity, both within and between workshops. The dance workshops have a range of forms including Jazz, Bharatanatyam and Kathak through which various children’s activities such as retelling the Panchatantra will be explored. The theatre workshops include but are not restricted to theatre games, activities, acting, improv, and comedy. Apart from these there will be a few creative writing workshops and a handful of workshops across the spectrum of music, arts & crafts, and puppetry. To ensure that evenings can be a time for the family, the NCPA will once again have children’s plays that can be enjoyed by everyone from the 6 year old to Dada-Dadi and Nana-Nani.
